Winter in Ballarat

18 May 2017

Winter in Ballarat

One may think that winter is time to hibernate, bring out the winter woollies, rug up in Ugg boots, light the fire and toast marshmallows but, don’t and I repeat, don’t be too quick to hide as there is a lot happening in Ballarat this winter.

Eureka Hotel

Blood on the Southern Cross

Every night Sovereign Hill stages a re-enactment of the Eureka Rebellion of 3rd December 1854.  This sound and light show is not to be missed.  It runs for 90 minutes and starts at either 6.45pm or 8pm.  Now in summer you would have to wait until the sunsets at 9pm making it a very late night for young children but, with the sun going down a lot earlier, this is the perfect time to rug up and take the kids and share an important part of our countries history

Winterlude

Winterlude

July in Ballarat is an amazing month.  Ice skating in the city centre, laneways and cellars bought to life with intriguing lights and illuminations, food carts and musicians.  Sovereign Hill also hosts a “Christmas in July” themed event with spectacular light shows and accompanying activities for young and old.

Stay tuned for further announcements but get your accommodation booked ASAP as this event brings the town alive and the hotels fill up.

50s Ballarat

Dr Blake Exhibition

Running until the 3rd September at the Gold Museum on Bradshaw St, this exhibition looks at both the cast and crew and how they have used historic locations around Ballarat to set the stories.  After visiting the exhibition, you may wish to pick up a copy of the Dr Blake Walking Tour from the Tourist Information centre and visit the locations in real life.

Wicked

Wicked

Her Majesty’s Theatre Ballarat is proud to present Wicked from 11th – 21st May.  Sometimes funny and at other times dramatic and moving, Wicked takes audiences on a spellbinding journey into a world of intrigue and surprises as it tells the story of a friendship between two women and how they became the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good.

Galleries & Museums

Wanting to stay indoors, then take a tour of one of our many museums or galleries. Ballarat has an amazing selection ranging from the Art Gallery of Ballarat which is Australia’s oldest region gallery and focuses on Australian art with various exhibitions throughout the year right through to Wyattart, a husband and wife collaboration of visual 2D and 3D arts.

Museum wise, no visit to Ballarat is complete without a trip to MADE, the Museum of Australian Democracy at Eureka which traces the history of democracy in Australia and follows the stories of the men and women who fought for the democratic freedoms we enjoy today.

For more information on the amazing array of museums and galleries on offer in Ballarat, check out the Visit Ballarat information page.

Back at the Bell Tower Inn, we have a lovely open fire waiting for you in reception and of course, our lovely warm heated indoor swimming pool.

The choice is yours, a nice warm swim after a long day exploring or a drink from the bar and plonking yourself in front of the fire.
