Ballarat has a long and distinguished history in the arts, the Art Gallery of Ballarat is Australia's oldest regional gallery, and the collection includes many of Australia’s greatest artists.  Entry is free and the Gallery even offers a free daily tour.  Experience a range of different styles of work, from the permanent exhibitions to the amazing and ever changing temporary exhibits.

Just up the road, Federation University has taken over the old post office and turned it into a gallery that shows works by students and staff from the uni as well as by local and emerging artists, while nearby is one of Ballarat's most unusual buildings, the Mechanics' Institute with its massive statue of Minerva on the roof. It’s also an arts hub, with its own theatre that shows films, hosts talks, and has a whole range of other events.

The Ballarat International Foto Bienniale (BIFB) is currently in it’s fourth outing.  Every two years Ballarat hosts a stunning collection of the most intriguing, challenging, amazing and thought provoking photos, with entries from around the world.
